Don Mulholland made this spool out of 1-1/2 inch galvanized steel pipe. There is a 7/16" diameter spiral rope guide welded on at each end, and two rope guides (probably scraps cut from the main pipe) welded to the sides. A hole in the main pipe provides a place to clip in.
This device was probably built for natural fiber ropes, possibly 5/8" or 3/4". Faint wear marks suggest that it was normally used with two or three wraps. It looks like it was not used extensively.
