Hauling Pulleys

In general, I don't collect caving, climbing and rescue pulleys, but I do have a collection of hauling pulleys, i.e., pulleys with built-in cams. These allow the user to reset for the next pull while the cam holds the load. There are two principle uses for hauling pulleys:

  1. General Hauling: There are a number of situations in caving and climbing (especially big-wall climbing) where pulleys are used to haul packs and equipment. High strength is less of a concern than light weight. The Rock Exotica Wall Hauler, Ural-Alp and USHBA Hauler are designed for this purpose. The Kong Block Roll, Petzl Mini-Traxion, and USHBA Hogwauler are primarily for general hauling but are also rated for live loads. The CMI Single Micro Hauler is specifically designed for rescue but might work just as well as a wall hauler. If you don't have any of these handy, you might want to know the Garda Knot.
  2. Rescue Hauling: Strength is more important when human life is supported, although I'd argue that a low failure probability is a more accurate criteria (the two are related, but not identical). Weight is not as much of a concern, nor is cost. The CMI Uplift, RSI Rescue Hauling Pulley, and SRT Rescuemates fit into this category. The CMI Micro Haulers are light-weight devices specifically designed for rescue.

When using pulleys in mechanical advantage systems, one should ensure that the mechanical advantage gained by the system does not allow one to apply forces that would damage any component of the system, especially a human body. I feel that too little attention is given to this.

In the ID field, I used a green background for pulleys that the manufacturer rated for human life, and red for those that were not so rated.
