The PBI plate is stamped out of 1/4-inch (6.4 mm) aluminum. It has very little rope contact area, which is a bit harder on the rope than a thicker device would be.

Functionally, the REI 11/11 is a fairly standard "Sticht" type belay device. Although smaller than most, it is large enough to handle, and has some margin for wear at each end. Being so small, it has little heat absorption capacity. The Chouinard 11/11 is similar.
