Thin Shell

My father made these for me in 1971. They are copied after a photo of the early Gibbs ascender; neither of us had seen the real thing at the time. The shell is formed from 2.4-mm stainless steel. The cam was cut from tool steel and hardened. I never measured the hardness, but when I tried to file the inside of the eye, I dulled the file without affecting the cam. Suffice it to say, these heavy cams wear very well.

The axles are 1/4 inch stainless steel bolts with hex and wing nuts. This combination takes far to long to assemble and disassemble. The upper bolt serves as a guide. It is not really needed, but is available as a spare should the first one be lost.

Thick Shell

This pair is identical to the first except the shell is 3.2 mm stainless steel. This was too thick to form easily, which is why the other pair uses thinner steel.
