[ Top | Stainless Steel Shell | Return to E.C. Ascenders ]
I acquired my CMI Ropewalker ascenders from K&R Adventure Gear in February, 2001.
The CMI Ropewalker is a modified version of the Gibbs ascender design. The CMI is well made, and it incorporates some new ideas. The shell is asymmetrical, with the left side having a small extension to support the cable clamp. The clamp is bolted on with two Allen-head cap screws. The cable keeper is too heavy and too stiff for my taste. The mud grooves in the shell are interesting: mud normally isn't a problem for this kind of ascender and I wonder if the grooves are really necessary. The cam eye is too large for conveniently sewing the ascender to my foot slings. Despite these nit-picks, there is nothing "wrong" with the CMI; but I still prefer the Gibbs.

This version uses a stainless steel shell. I can't justify the extra weight this brings.
