Adams (Arborist News, April 2005) wrote, "Arbor
lore is that a climber named Uli Distel attempted to tie the Schwabich but neglected to change
the direction of the split-tail when he made the turns above the
bridge. It turned out that this configuration worked well for
climbing, and the knot was given the name Distel."
Unlike the Taut-line Hitch,
both ends of the split-tail are connected to a carabiner in the
climbing system.
